The American economy is undergoing a dramatic change. As baby boomers head to the later years of their lives, it is having a profound impact on the American labor market. The baby boomers represent a population of approximately 77 million Americans, and as they head into retirement years their needs will create a number of new jobs and their retirement will create much opportunity in their existing employment.
The fact is that as baby boomers head towards old age, they will have to deal with myriad health issues. Thus, jobs in healthcare are one of the fastest growing segments of American employment.
Because of the large number of people that will consume health services, and the high cost and relative shortage of doctors, we are seeing a steady increase in demand for nurses, physical therapists and physician's assistants. The US Labor Department estimates that over the 10 years between 2002 and 2012, over 600,000 nursing jobs will become available. That represents a 27% increase over 2002. In fact, a current nursing shortage has required many hospitals to hire nurses from the Philippines and move them here. Explosive job numbers do not end with nurses. During this same period, the number of Physician's Assistants jobs is expected to grow by 50% and the demand for physical and occupational therapists will grow by 35%.
