The aging of the American population combined with advances in medical technology that allow for the treatment of thousands of infirmities have combined to create tremendous demand on the American healthcare system. This has resulted in a shortage of critical personnel throughout the industry. The flipside is that the healthcare industry is now one of America's hottest job markets.

Surgical Technicians work at the side of the surgeon during surgery. They ensure that all of the necessary equipment is in place in the operating room before surgery and that all of the instruments are sterilized and where they should be. They are knowledgeable in how to prevent and control infections as well as how to handle certain drugs and supplies. Surgical Technicians must attend a specialized Surgical Technician school accredited by the American Medical Association's Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA). In order to enroll in such a program, you must be a high school graduate. Subjects covered in Surgical Technologist Training Programs include anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, microbiology, medical terminology, and ethics.
