Trade schools specialize in teaching real-world job-practical skills. Often trade schools are also called technical schools or vocational colleges. In such programs a student will specialize and perfect a singular trade, whether it is automotive mechanics, home appliance repair, or others. Over the years everything from dishwashers to cars have increased in their level of sophistication. While at one time you could rely on a handyman with no formal training to repair a plethora of household items, today almost everything in the home requires a trained and specialized hand. Trade schools are where one goes for the training and certification necessary to be qualified for such endeavors.
Usually vocational and technical programs last 1 or 2 years. 1 year programs are known as certificate programs, and 2 year programs are known as diploma programs or associate's degrees. The length of program will depend on one's desired area of specialization. The roadblock that many aspiring trade school students encounter is that they cannot afford to give up their current employment to go to trade school. This is catch-22, as they would like to earn more money, but they cannot give up their low paying jobs to get the training required for a higher paying job. This leads to years of inertia. In order meet the needs of such people; many established colleges have developed Online Trade Schools. Such schools allow people to maintain their jobs while training for new ones in their spare time and from the comfort of their own homes. Years and years ago, it was not uncommon for rural Americans to learn trades through correspondence courses. Many barber colleges operated in this fashion. Today, however, computer technology has transformed the amount of information that can be taught remotely.
