Most Dental Schools require that applicants have had at least 2 years of college-level pre-dental education. Practically speaking, however, the majority of dental students have earned at least a bachelor's degree. Coursework taken before dental school by most students emphasizes the sciences. Programs generally start with classroom instruction and laboratory work in basic sciences, including anatomy, microbiology, biochemistry, and physiology. Beginning courses in clinical sciences, including laboratory techniques, also are provided at this time. During the last 2 years, students treat patients, usually in dental clinics, under the supervision of licensed dentists. For many people, Dental School is not appealing prospect. For those who are eager to get working, an Associate's Degree in Dental Hygiene can usually be earned in 2 years.
