Bethesda is home to more than 2,800 businesses with a downtown workforce that exceeds 33,000. The services industry is the largest employer, with some 1,263 firms and more than 16,000 employees. Retail trade and finance/insurance/real estate are second and third, respectively.

The Bethesda Metrorail Station, in the heart of the downtown, handles more than 15,000 passengers on the average weekday. On a typical Saturday, some 5,500 passengers pass through the station and, on Sunday, passengers number about 3,600. The number of passengers exiting the Bethesda Metrorail Station exceeds the number entering the station on both weekdays and weekends.
